Breaking Down Barriers: How Internationalisation is Making Workplaces More LGBTQ+ Inclusive
Let’s talk about something that's changing the way we work: internationalisation. It’s not just helping businesses expand across borders—it’s creating a huge shift towards LGBTQ+ inclusion, especially in fields like media, arts, and international organisations. Diversity and inclusion are becoming more than just buzzwords; they’re now becoming key values that companies are embracing globally. So, what’s driving this shift? For one, multinational corporations (MNCs) are stepping up. Nowadays, you’ll find that many big brands have specific policies aimed at LGBTQ+ inclusion. They’re not just saying, “We welcome everyone”—they’re actually creating space for LGBTQ+ employees, giving them a chance to bring their whole selves to work without fear of discrimination. Take the 500 biggest companies in the U.S., for example. In 2023, over 90% of them had adopted non-discrimination policies that specifically protect employees based on their sexual orientation, according to the Human Rights Campaign (HRC). Not only does this make workplaces safer, but it also attracts a wider, more diverse talent pool. It’s about time! But here’s the other side of the story: while more companies are including LGBTQ+ folks, there’s still a long road ahead. LGBTQ+ employees are getting a seat at the table, but they’re still facing high levels of discrimination at every stage of their careers. A 2022 survey by Out & Equal revealed a tough truth—LGBTQ+ employees are over 60% more likely to face inequality in countries without strong anti-discrimination laws. That means that even if they’re in the workforce, many LGBTQ+ employees aren’t necessarily thriving. So yes, internationalisation is opening doors for LGBTQ+ inclusion. And while there’s progress, we’ve still got a ways to go to ensure every LGBTQ+ employee feels fully welcomed and respected. Here’s to hoping that more countries—and companies—embrace anti-discrimination protections and create a truly inclusive environment where everyone can thrive.
